Brèves d'Halloween or how to scare yourself just researching the internet....

Hello everyone, 

A bit of an early posting this week! As you may have noticed all around you, it's Halloween today. To stick to the general mood, we have decided to have scary brèves today! So, here you go, top 3 of the most haunted places in London! 

1. Tower of London : 
Apparently, it would one of the most ghostly inhabited  places  in the UK. This is not really surprising as this place built by William the conqueror, has been : a castle, a prison, a place of many many executions... You will remember Ann Boleyn who was beheaded there... The story is that you can see a lot of famous royal ghosts on full moon nights such as Lady Jane Gray, The 2 princes, Henry the VIth and even a bear!


2- Highgate cemetery:

And that's just the entrance...

Highgate was built in the Victorian period. It already looks nicely creepy, like a peculiarly dark Tim
Burton movie... Well, guess what, it's haunted and apparently there's even vampires leaving in it! On the cultural side, if you ever want to go and visit (I would recommend a bright sunny day), you can see Karl Marx's grave. 




3- The Viaduct Tavern: 

What would London be without its pubs, I'll tell you, freaking boring! Even they are haunted! The Viaduct Tavern has a reputation of being the most haunted place in London ! It was built on a former jail, with cells still visible in the basement. There is some odd stories of waiters being locked in the closet without any good reason, or the lights in the ladies room being turned off by... no one... 


Well that's it for me, but there are many many other haunted places in London, you should try a scary tour if you have the chance (let us know if you do!).

Snort and squint this week... En bref, ça pique les yeux !

Salut tout le monde, Joyeux Vendredi !

While Paprika takes advantage of the newly arrived autumn to experiment with paint (with questionable results), I would like your opinion on one of my recent discoveries: I can decide if it's genius or rubbish...

Tandis que Paprika profite de l'arrivée du froid pour se mettre à la peinture (avec des résultats mitigés...), j'aimerais vous soumettre une de mes découvertes de la semaine dernière sur laquelle je n'arrive pas à me décider : génie ou foutaises ? 


I give you: EYE PAINTING. No no, I don't mean artful make up techniques, I mean painting... with your eyes. Don't worry, I was confused too. This is about a young Argentinian artist who recently popped up in the news, Leandro Granato. What's very special about Leandro, is his pretty unique painting technique: he snorts up paint (yes yes, through his nose) and cries it on the canvas (yes yes, through his eyes). I'll let you check the article from the Daily Mail and the video from ITN News, but stear clear of the video and pictures if you're very sensitive, they can be a bit gross. 

Je vous présente : la PEINTURE à L'OEIL. Non non, il ne s'agit pas de peinture gratuite, je veux dire de la peinture... avec les yeux. Oui je sais, moi non plus je n'ai pas compris tout de suite. Il s'agit d'un jeune peintre argentin, Leandro Granato, qui est récemment apparu dans les infos (en ligne). Ce qui caractérise Leandro, c'est sa technique de peinture plutôt unique : il renifle de la peinture (oui oui, par le nez) puis la pleure sur la toile (oui oui, par les yeux). Je vous laisse regarder l'article et la vidéo de meltybuzz, mais je déconseille la vidéo aux âmes sensibles, ça peut être assez dégoûtant.

So what do you think? Genius new form of art, or crazy fancy? My first reaction was quite negative, I thought it was a bit stupid to damage your eyes that way and the painting's picture on the newspaper was quite bland. But it turns our that the artist has developed a harmless painting formula and his Jackson Pollock inspired work is actually quite colourful. Still can't decide if I like it or not... I wonder what our favourite artist, C. thinks.

Alors, qu'est-ce que vous en pensez ? Nouvelle forme d'art pleine de génie, ou lubie dégénérée ? Ma première réaction a été plutôt négative, je trouvait stupide de se ruiner les yeux et la photo du journal était assez fade. Mais apparemment l'artiste a développé une formule de peinture sans danger pour ses yeux, et ses oeuvres, inspirées de Jackson Pollock, sont pleines de couleur. Je n'arrive toujours pas à décider si j'aime... Je me demande ce qu'en pense notre artiste préférée, C. !

Dear Readers,

Aujourd'hui, j'allais procrastiner...
Mais finalement je le ferai demain.

I really didn't have time to write a new post today since I was busy trying out a new brownie recipe that I am sure you will love! I wasn't going to write at all but here's instead a selection of random pics that made me smile lately. There's some wise truths and some not as... sophisticated humour.

Je n'avais vraiment pas le temps d'écrire un nouvel article ce soir, occupée que j'étais à essayer une nouvelle recette de brownie dont je sens qu'elle va vous réjouir les papilles ! Du coup je n'allais pas écrire du tout, mais voici à la place un florilège en vrac de photos qui m'ont fait sourire ces derniers temps. Il y a un peu de tout, des vérités profondes et parfois de l'humour... un peu moins fin.

 

Le chocolat vient du cacao,

C'est donc une plante.

Par conséquent, le chocolat compte
comme de la salade.

Point final.

Quand tu es mort, tu ne sais pas que tu es mort. C'est juste difficile pour les autres.

Brèves / Short and not so sweet

Hello, 

It's Friday!!! You know what that means, it's time for the Brèves, so today it's a top 3! 

1. They might have found the roman ring that inspired J.R.R. Tolkien for Lord of the ring! It's been found in an old roman temple in England. It is believed that it was linked to a tablet which was protected by a malediction.... More info here and there for French.

It's not the actual one but I thought it looked more impressive : )

2. The gate to hell also known as Plutonion, which has been described in ancient Greek mythology has been discovered ! Guess what, it's not a tube entrance... More info here and ici.

3. Last but not least,I saw that today on the internet. Who would have thought that video game super hero could be so kinky???

Short and (not so) sweet this week - After ever after

 Can I just say this? THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY! Ah, it's good to let it out! Welcome back or just welcome, it is nice to have you here!

So while Paprika dreams of sailing around the globe and L. is enjoying a long week end on Planet Mars, I am left to entertain you before the weekend. 

I must admit, I am feeling a certain pressure after L.'s last Brèves and the unbeatable pony video. I know the post is in French but just skip straight to the video, it's worth it. Still, I love a challenge...

 
Anyways, in our usual "short and sweet" Friday style, I give you... completely random pics, facts and videos that made my week a bit more bearable. 

Do you remember that guy?

Starting with the serious-ish scientific stuff, paleontologists in Spain have discovered Dinosaur eggs and been able to identify 4 different species (that's a first). Does it also make you wonder if they're going to pull a "Jurassic Park" on us and start growing baby dinosaurs? I mean, with genetic science, can they extract some DNA and clone it? Where do you store live dinosaurs? 





Speaking of meteors, scientists in Russia are currently developing the ultimate protection shield against meteorites:

But let's get to the core of this post, the REALLY important stuff, the question we ALL want an answer to (admit it!): what happens to all the Disney princesses AFTER their happily ever after? John Cozart, aka PAINT, answers that question in this hilarious video (and the guy has serious talent!).

On Dolfin Raves and G&T: c'est vendredi !

Hello and Bonjour ! 

Yes this is Friday and we are all looking forward to our after work drinks. 
 L. and I have a thing for Gin and Tonic (G&T), which makes some of my English colleagues laugh, as apparently only older people order those. Well, I have it under pretty good authority that cooler people drink them too! So imagine how excited I was to find out last night (thanks to my flatmate) that they even come in cans!

Oui c'est vendredi, et on n'a tous qu'une hâte c'est d'aller boire ce verre après le boulot.
L. et moi on a un faible pour le Gin and Tonic (G&T). Mes collègues anglaises disent que c'est un truc de vieux mais je sais de source sûre que c'est une boisson pour les gens cool. La preuve en images : je viens de découvrir grâce à ma coloc que ça s'achète même en canette !

For this Friday's short and sweet post, here's a few random facts L. gathered for us through the week.

Pour la brève de cette semaine, voilà quelques faits divers collectés par L.

Let's start with the scary stuff: apparently, some scientists have created a zombie cell! How creepy is that? And they say it's actually more functional than its living counterpart. I don't know about you but L. and I are freaking out here, will we all end like this?!?

Commençons par le truc flippant : il semble que des scientifiques viennent de créer la première cellule zombie ! Apparemment elle serait même plus fonctionnelle que son alter ego vivant. Je sais pas vous mais L. et moi on panique un peu là. Est-ce qu'on va tous finir comme ça ?!?

Pourquoi avoir peur d'une invasion zombie
quand vous êtes déjà des zombies ?

Ok ok, week end is near and we want happy stuff so here you go: Dophins (no, we will NOT post cute kittens, you'll have to make do with the dolphins!). In California an exceptionnally huge pod of dolphins was witnessed, apparently thousands of them all swimming together (below). Rumour (or should I say L.?) has it that they were all going to a massive rave party!

Bon ok, c'est bientôt le weekend et on veut plutôt sourire, donc voilà des dauphins (NON, on ne postera pas de chatons mignons, va falloir vous contenter des dauphins !). Sur la côte californienne a été observé un énorme banc de dauphins, plusieurs milliers d'entre eux nageant dans la même direction (ci-dessus). Apparemment ils avaient tous rencard à la rave du siècle (en tout cas d'après L.).


And last but not least, a couple of weeks ago a diver saved a dolphin that had come to him asking for help (what do you mean, dolphins "again"? Who gets tired of dolphins? Stop complaining and maybe next time I'll get you some pandas).

Et pour terminer, il y a une quinzaine de jours, un plongeur a sauvé un dauphin qui était venu lui demander de l'aide (comment ça "encore" des dauphins ? on ne se lasse pas des dauphins ! Si vous arrêtez de râler peut-être que la prochaine fois je vous trouverai des pandas).

Hello dearest readers! 

L et moi avons décidé de tenter un nouveau concept : "Les brèves du vendredi" - parce que bon, c'est la fin de la semaine après tout et nous n'aspirons tous qu'à un peu de légèreté. Comme tout nouveau concept, il n'est bien sûr pas du tout au point, alors, en vrac, la semaine en images :

Lundi, L a fait la découverte de la semaine : 

L'"ourson d'eau", qui serait apparemment le seul organisme connu à ce jour capable de survivre dans l'espace ! Avouez qu'il a une bonne tête quand même...

On Monday, L made an amazing discovery: 

The "water bear" which seems to be the only organism known to date who could potentially survive in space! And speaking of amazing check out its face!

Mardi la neige londonienne a commencé à fondre sous un soleil plus que bienvenu !  De toute façon il se passe jamais rien le mardi...

On Tuesday, a long awaited sun started to melt the snow! I know, boring, but it's not like anything more exciting ever happens on Tuesdays...

Mercredi, à l'occasion du nouvel article de L, nos chers lecteurs anglophones ont pu faire l'expérience du superbe outil de traduction Google que nous avons installé sur le blog. Avec des résultats... plutôt intéressants ! 

On Wednesday, L posted in French so one of our dedicated English speaking readers used our Google translation tool and enjoyed... interesting results!

Jeudi, quand la semaine commence à ressembler à une quête naine organisée par un Gandalf bourré...

 Thursday, when your week begins to feel like a Tolkien quest lead by a much drunken Gandalf...
